Since the rotor flux is fixed and cannot be controlled or disengaged when a short circuit (SC) is initiated, high-speed permanent magnet starter generator (HSPMSG) exhibits a significant interturn short-circuit (ITSC) or end short-SC current, which can lead to overheating and pose risks to the reliability and safety of the generating system. This paper comprehensively analyzes and compares the electromagnetic characteristics of toroidal-winding and lap-winding HSPMSGs under normal operation, winding end SC fault, and ITSC fault. The toroidal-winding HSPMSG was found having comparable electromagnetic performance with lap-winding HSPMSG under normal operation, but has stronger ability to suppress the SC current, especially for the ITSC fault. Finally, a toroidal-winding HSPMSG prototype was fabricated and the theorical analysis was verified.
