We present a transfer matrix method (TMM) which we show may be combined with the envelope approximation to simulate heterostructures of significant complexity in a very efficient manner. Transfer matrices based on localized states have been previously used in the study of two-dimensional photonic crystals. The method presented here is designed specifically for heterostructures, using smaller matrices.
