Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are being employed in a variety of business and non-commercial fields with various applications. Drones are being used to perform a variety of tasks, including cargo delivery, traffic management, seeding, filmmaking, security surveillance, etc. With the rise of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) in the public and private sectors, they are being employed by a range of persons to carry out harmful missions. As a result, drones pose a substantial threat to an individual’s security and privacy. UAV-related incidents are developing daily, opening a new area of research for academics and industry. In this paper, we describe the generic architecture for controlling the UAVs system as well as the platforms available for detecting unauthorized UAVs. Furthermore, we discuss the various types of networks that are used in drone communications with a variety of detection systems, which provide security against unlawful UAVs. Finally, after a detailed investigation, we discovered several research issues that need to be addressed by the research community. Additionally, designing a hybrid detection system (which works well on both ground and air-based systems) for UAVs is still an open challenge for researchers. Besides, tracking the location of drone operators and the scarcity of datasets still needs attention.
