Increased penetration of renewable generation in a inter connected grid increases the stability issues. This has led to development of grid scale battery storage system to improve the transient stability. It is also advantageous in supply-demand balancing, rapid frequency regulation, peak shaving, load shifting, Duck curve mitigation and reliability improvement. However, several control techniques embedded in the controllers to achieve the aforementioned targets and comply the grid code, limits the application of conventional fault detection techniques due to the modulation of current and voltage during fault. Hence, in this work a new technique is proposed using Wavelet transform applied to a function derived from relay current and its rate of change of current to detect the fault. The simulation results obtained from the MATLAB/SIMULINK 2023a, for a 700 V, 25 KW grid connected system, reveals the proposed method is not affected by the control techniques and has the ability to detect the high resistance fault accurately. The improved reliability of the proposed technique ensures the grid scale storage requirements.
