As the drone industry develops rapidly, drones are used for a wide range of applications, including monitoring, surveillance, security, and more. We investigated the overall efficiency of the coaxial DC motor propulsion system. Taguchi method was adopted for the design of the experiment with the factors of motor size, battery voltage level, and the distance between the propellers. We also explored the efficiency loss compared to the non-coaxial setup of the same DC motor propulsion system. The coaxial motor setup provided larger thrust and redundancy in the same propeller area, but with the side effect of the loss of efficiency. The result of this study provides drone researchers with an efficient method affected by the factors determined in this study.
