The integrated power system (IPS) in naval ships provides architectural flexibility, improved survivability and stealth, and enhanced war fighting capability with fewer component counts and reduced cost of ownership and has served as a stepping stone for the more electric and all electric ship initiative. However, the major challenge with the IPS is the contingency management to restore failing systems and prevent cascading of faults under battle damage. This can be achieved by incorporating fault detection, failure assessment and restoration strategies into IPS automation systems for survivability and effective resource management.
