A figure shows the dispersion map, where z/sub A/=nz/sub p/ with z/sub A/ and z/sub p/ the amplifier spacing and the dispersion period respectively, and n/spl les/1 in conventional dispersion managed (CDM) systems. Liang and Hasegawa proposed the dense periodical dispersion fiber (DPF) systems by changing the doping or (and) drawing speed, where n/spl ges/1 and z/sub p/ is about 100 m-20 km. DPF will be useful both in reconfigurable networks and long distance transmission systems because of its short dispersion period. In lossless systems, the soliton collision distance will be longest at optimal map strength s=1.65 (where s=((k'/sub 2/-k'/sub ave/))z/sub 2/-(k'/sub 1/-k'(ave))z/sub 1/)/t/sub FWHM/. To reach the optimal s in ultra-high speed CDM soliton systems, we must choose very low local dispersion which may induce large four-wave-mixing (FWM). However, we can reach optimal s by using DPF with high local dispersion. Our simulation shows 80 Gbit/s soliton can transmit over 9,000 km in optimal DPF, and FWM in DPF can be 28.1-43.9 dB less than that in CDM systems.
