Model predictive control (MPC) is another popular control method for permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) drives, besides direct torque control and field-oriented control. In some important field, fault-tolerant control of PMSM is greatly needed. The interturn fault (ITF) is a strongly destructive fault of PMSM, which can result in the large torque ripple and can affect the system to run reliably. In this article, to remove the impact of ITF on the torque and ensure the reliable operation, the MPC-based torque ripple suppression strategy is studied. Two different model predictive current controls (MPCCs), including MPCC-I and MPCC-II for normal and postfault operations, share the common predictive model, and only the compensation currents are added into cost function in MPCC-II for torque ripple suppression due to the ITF. Furthermore, the compensation currents can be adaptively obtained without the restriction of the change of the ITF severity (fault resistance and short-circuit turn ratio), thus reducing the complexity of the control method of PMSM drives taking into account the ITF. The contribution of this article is validated with the theoretical analysis, simulation, and experimental studies.
