Accidents occur frequently on highways due to the speed of the vehicles, vehicle breakdowns, and slipping. Since there are no alternative roads available to re-route, the vehicles arrive after the crashed vehicle, builds up a significant amount of traffic behind the accident site. At present, there is no mechanism to identify the event of an accident without a following driver informing the relevant parties. Hence traffic congestion has become a significant inconvenience for anyone who expects to reach their destination in a short period of time and also increases fuel consumption due to the queue. In order to reduce the accident-related traffic congestion, decrease fuel consumption, and minimize CO2 emissions while waiting in the traffic, this research suggests a communication network using vehicular communications to alert approaching vehicles in the event of an accident. Using OMNeT++, Veins, and Sumo, a communication network is implemented to reduce traffic congestion, fuel consumption, and CO2 emission by reducing the speeds of vehicles according to their distances by communicating between vehicles and RSUs.
