Electric Vehicle (EV) technology is advancing rapidly. Battery storage technology is a prime contributor to vehicle range increases, charging time reductions, and cost reductions. These technology improvements are predicted to rapidly change the popularity and usage of EVs. These advances will cause the need for comprehensive models of EV usage and charging, and the resulting requirements on the electric power system. This paper discusses transportation models for this new generation of EVs, and predicts the characteristics of commercial rapid (Level 3) charging stations at a point where these stations would become commercially viable. The paper also discusses uncertainties in the modeling and data needs for the development of improved models.
