Range anxiety has been the center of the discussions related to the electric vehicles. It is necessary for the vehicle to have the right HV battery capacity. The HV battery should be able to provide sufficient acceleration-deceleration power and energy for a given range to fulfil the quintessential driving pattern of the vehicles. This paper summarizes a method to calculate of energy consumption in Wh/Km by considering various time variant road loads such as rolling resistance, aerodynamic drag, gradient resistance and inertia resistance, as it is the primary factor for sizing the battery capacity in kWh along with various auxiliary loads such as vacuum pump, radiator fan and coolant pump. Standard driving cycles such as NEDC, HWFET, US06 and UDDS have been used for simulations and estimation of kWh capacity of battery.
