Traffic management is one of the most serious challenges faced by almost all countries in the world. Rapid industrialization, economic development, and an increase in income of people have led to an exponential rise in the number of vehicles on the roads. This rapid increase in the number of vehicles has led to the problem of Traffic Congestion. The current manual methods of traffic management are inadequate to manage the huge volume of vehicles. Hence traffic management must be automated with the help of technology. Researchers are working to develop an ‘Intelligent Traffic Management System’ that would be able to manage the traffic efficiently with minimal human intervention. Observation, measurement, and recording of Traffic data are very important to design an effective algorithm for the system. Many techniques have been developed to automate the Traffic Measurement process, but they are complex and costly solutions and suffer from numerous drawbacks. In this work, we have proposed the use of RFID as a suitable alternative for measuring traffic density. A prototype model of the system has been designed and implemented which will provide an idea about the suitability of the technique as a superior alternative.
