The effect of winding arrangements in dual three-phase permanent magnet (PM) machines is investigated in this paper. The classic 48-slot/8-pole machine is selected as a case study, in which three in-phase windings and one out-of-phase winding are compared. The distribution level of winding sets is identified and its relationship with machine performances is focused. Based on two-dimensional finite element method, the key electromagnetic characteristics of the four cases, under both the normal and fault conditions, are evaluated. The results reveal that the different winding arrangements have their own advantages under various operating conditions, and the performances correspond to the distribution level. The winding arrangements with low distribution levels benefit from less magnetic couplings between the winding sets but more significant parasitic effects, while the cases with high distribution levels exhibit more symmetrical MMFs and less local saturations.
