In this paper, double stator axial field (AF) switched reluctance motor (SRM) was designed for automotive fan application to achieve higher efficiency more than the previously used BLDC and to compare it with 12/8 SRM and single stator AF SRM. The AF type motor has the advantage of producing higher torque per unit volume than radial type motor of the same size and volume. However, the force in single stator AF SRM is unbalanced due to the excitation on one side only. Therefore, double stator AF SRM was designed to compensate the axial force, by changing the shape of stator slot to decrease the magnetic resistance thus increasing the flux flowing into the stator while at the same time increasing torque and phase inductance. Finite element analysis (FEA) was performed to obtain static characteristics of the proposed motor and MATLAB Simulink was used to verify its performance.
