Commercial aircraft networks using commercial standards, protocols, services and products are becoming reality with the ARINC 664 standard. The implications for air-frame builders, avionics manufacturers and suppliers indicates a "sea change" in what had been a primarily customized and proprietary products and services. New products and services will use an open source, open architecture approach to commercial aviation networks. One near term result should be major reduction in the costs of aviation network products and services. A second near term result will be a substantial increase in capabilities and capacity.
