Summary form only given. Optical soliton transmission is very attractive for realizing an ultra highspeed long-distance optical system. When attempting a transoceanic transmission at a bit rate beyond several tens Gbit/s, there are several problems, such as the Gordon-Haus jitter, dispersive wave, and accumulation of amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) noise, which must be overcome to increase the transmission distance. In this paper, we show for the first time to our knowledge, that it is possible to send 40-Gbit/s single-channel soliton data over 70,000 km through the use of in-line modulation. A 40-Gbit/s soliton transmission experiment was undertaken in a 250-km dispersion-shifted fiber loop.
