The paper presents the genesis of intensive development of electric drives with their own energy sources in the form of batteries. It also discusses the most popular lithium cells, which are the basis for the production of battery modules. The paper presents the size of a possible reduction of fuel consumption depending on the degree of electrification of the vehicle (micro hybrid, plug in hybrid, pure electric etc.) The paper shows limit parameters form cells determining their correct functioning. Against this background, the goals of constructing BMS systems have been outlined. As well as their most important performance parameters. It also discusses the following features of BMS: Architecture, Communication, Protection, Recuperation. The paper also points at legal restrictions connected with the safety risk being caused because of its ability to spontaneous combustion or its toxic properties.
