The millimeter wave (mmWave) communications have shown huge potential in 5G cellular networks for its feasibility to offer large bandwidth to effectively increase the system capacity. The beamforming technology can efficiently lessen the severe path loss in the mmWave band via antennas arrays. However, in random access (RA) process, the base station cannot fully benefit from beamforming due to the lack of best beam pair of transmit-receive. Furthermore, increasing antenna dimensions bring great challenge in RA receiver design to satisfy the short latency requirement of 5G. In this work, a low complexity RA receiver based on two-stage filter is proposed to adapt the latest development of standards and to alleviate the severe fading in mmWave systems. Through simulations and comparisons, we demonstrate that the proposed design shortens processing delay and the receiver provides the same missed detection probability with the conventional approach.
