This article investigates the influence of the winding configurations on the core flux density harmonics of the axial modular flux switching permanent magnet (AM-FSPM) and conventional flux switching permanent magnet (FSPM) machine. The relationships between air-gap flux density harmonics and stator–rotor core flux density harmonics of the AM-FSPM machine with toroidal winding (TW) and the FSPM machine with concentrated winding (CW) are derived based on the magnetic field modulation theory. Then, the core loss production mechanism of the two machines is revealed. Moreover, the armature reaction flux density harmonic amplitude ratio is proposed to represent the output torque and core loss of two machines. Thus, the efficiency trends of the two machines can be predicted at different working conditions, which is helpful in providing effective guidance on high-efficiency design. Furthermore, the torque and core loss characteristics of the two machines are verified by finite element analysis (FEA) and experiments.
