In addressing the question of whether modern trams are suitable for local conditions in China, a rigorous study was undertaken, exploring the applicability of modern trams through the utilization of the TOPSIS algorithm. Initially, the distinct characteristics of trams were meticulously outlined. Subsequently, using the TOPSIS algorithm, a comparative analysis was conducted, ranking modern trams alongside other modes of transportation, including subways, light rail, ART, BRT, and traditional public transportation. This comparative evaluation allowed for a comprehensive understanding of the relative strengths and weaknesses of modern trams in comparison to other modes. Furthermore, the current operational status of modern rail transit in China was thoroughly examined. This analysis encompassed an exploration of the reasons behind the dismantling of certain tram lines, offering insights into the challenges faced by this mode of transportation in the Chinese context. Finally, a focused analysis was conducted on the scenarios where modern trams could potentially be most suitable and effective. This comprehensive study not only contributes to the understanding of modern trams' adaptability in China but also provides valuable insights for future transportation planning and development.
