This paper explores the feasibility of using Semi-Submersible Vessels, or more recently known as Low-Profile Vessels (LPVs) for modern day transport. While the role of LPVs was remarkable in transport history, current usage has generally diminished to illicit narcotics smuggling industry. However, technological developments such as autonomy and global dynamics have instigated discussions on the LPV's relevancy for larger future roles. Characteristics that made them successful in the past are studied for design inspiration of a modern conceptual LPV hull. Hydrodynamic resistance and stability of LPV features are analyzed using numerical tools and tow tank testing. Seakeeping performance is measured using potential flow methods on conceptual full scale LPVs at three size levels. A use case of regional level littoral transport is considered, where the hydrodynamic efficiency is shown to be superior in comparison with legacy vessels. These hull forms offer natural benefits in terms of seakeeping and efficient drag characteristics when operated at optimal velocity. In addition, the low profile of LPVs can be useful given rising global geopolitical tensions; issues of piracy and territorial disputes demonstrate a need for transport vessels with low-detectibility characteristics.
