The electrification of the mobility sector is a crucial step towards achieving global climate goals. Electric traction motors, as an essential component in electric drive trains, require critical materials such as copper and rare earth elements. The rapid increase in electric vehicle production raises concerns about the availability of these materials. In addition, the mining of these materials can lead to environmental damage. To counter these issues, end-of-life electric traction motors can be disassembled to recover the material and remanufacture or recycle it. However, the disassembly is a very challenging process due to non-detachable joints. These joints should be disassembled without damage so the subsequent disassembly steps are not obstructed and the parts can be reused. Within this research paper the disassembly of rotors of permanent magnet synchronous machines is investigated. Relevant product and process parameters for the disassembly are identified and experimentally investigated. The results show the disassembly is possible with the correct parameter set. In addition, the influences of the investigated product parameters, particularly the magnet coating and the age of the rotor, are more relevant to the disassembly than the process parameters.
