ln conclusion, the photoinduced rotation of the principal axis of the birefringence has been observed on a exposure of the circular-core singlemode fiber to a linearly polarized argon-ion laser at 488 nm whose polarization was aligned along one of the principal axes of the initial birefringence of the fiber. A rotation angle for up to 57/spl deg/ has been observed after the several exposures for totally four hours for a length of 90 cm fiber.<>
