Electrification can improve performance for fixedwing and rotary-wing aircraft propulsion applications. A powertrain testbed is developed to design and test advanced hybrid electric control strategies. Subscale electric machines controlled using simulated models on a real-time target machine emulate the dynamic response of various types of shaft power sources and loads. Results demonstrate an appropriate speed and torque control methodology that is well-suited for powertrain emulation and full-scale control system development.
