Two-random-access protocols for optical direct-detection code-division multiple access packet networks are proposed. Both system throughput and average packet delay are derived and investigated for two famous receiver models, namely the correlation and chip-level receivers. Our results reveal that the proposed protocols yield competitive system through-put is achieved when using chip-level receivers along with the second protocol. Further, a mathematical description of connection establishment/release of the second protocol is presented using a detailed state diagram. The steady-state system throughput for this state diagram is then derived using a simplified technique. The effect of several design parameters on the above performance measure has been examined with the aid of a set of numerical examples. In our numerical calculations chip-level models have been adopted at the receiver side.
