The appropriate selection of motor and its control is very crucial for the better performance of the Electric Vehicle (EV) in terms of smooth, safe, reliable, and disturbance-free operation. Depending on the type of driving, a particular motor's behaviour may change. An urban and suburban area's drive cycle is a representation of its driving behaviour. The Multiphase Induction Machines possess several advantages of high torque density, lower torque ripples, fault tolerant capability and reduced rating of inverter switches over the conventional three phase machines. Hence, the use of multiphase (higher than 3) induction motors as the propulsion drive is an appropriate solution for EV, where the system overall demands high reliability, public safety, and continuity of operation under fault. The above are the significant concerns of the drive selection with the reasonable cost. Therefore, in this paper the drive cycle-based performance analysis of FPIM is carried out for electric vehicle applications. The urban Indian drive cycle is chosen to generate the reference speed of the close loop control of propulsion drive. The rotor field-oriented control (RFOC) method using hysteresis current controller (HCC) technique is developed to control the FPIM based propulsion drive which is used to drive the three-wheel auto rickshaw. entire electric vehicle drive system is simulated in MATLAB/SIMULINK and performance analysis of the various machine and vehicle parameters are presented.
