The problems of the certification of the fitness of military aircraft to enter Service have increased significantly with the introduction of electronic equipments into areas of the aircraft which directly relate to primary flight safety. In addition to the effects of the self generated electro-magnetic environment, those due to the external environment must also be considered. The design of meaningful aircraft tests, leading to the establishment of an adequate margin of safety, requires an understanding of the susceptibility of the individual equipments. Present equipment test specificatians, particularly radiated susceptibility tests, are inadequate for this purpose. An alternative approach is suggested.
