Optimal unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) placement is studied for a dual-hop wireless regenerative relaying system in which a UAV acts as a relay to forward the messages from a base station (BS) to a mobile station (MS). The hops are assumed to be subject to independent Rayleigh fading. First, the problem of UAV placement is formulated as a convex optimization problem to minimize the outage probability of the MS with the distance constraints of BS and UAV, respectively. Then, the classical KKT condition is utilized to obtain the closed-form expression of the optimal UAV position. More importantly, under the same channel parameters and antenna parameter of each hop, we conclude that the optimal UAV placement is only determined by the transmit power ratio between the BS and UAV. Finally, simulation results verify the effectiveness of the proposed approach.
