TravTek is a joint sector operational field test of an advanced traveler information and traffic management system (ATIS/ATMS). The TravTek system comprised one hundred specially equipped cars; a Traffic Management Center (TMC); and the TravTek Information Services Center (TISC). The rental and local user field studies were conducted as part of the TravTek evaluation program as opportunities to observe how people used the system when they were free to make choices. Preliminary results focusing on how drivers used route guidance, a major feature available to TravTek drivers are given. Results are based on a subset of in-vehicle log data, and reveal how often drivers used the route guidance function, how they entered destinations, chose route selection methods, and used the visual and voice guidance displays.
