In this paper, a vehicle dynamic model and the corresponding hierarchical control structure are proposed for the handing stability control of a distributed drive electric vehicle. The upper layer of the proposed control scheme adopts a sliding mode controller for the motion tracking. Then, an optimal controller is used for the torque distribution in the middle layer. Besides, the stability control of single-wheel and muti-wheel failure is discussed. Considering the difference between the distributed in-wheel motor will directly affect the control effect of vehicle dynamics, an adaptive control method is proposed to compensate motor characteristics in the lower layer. Finally, the simulation results are executed to validate the effectiveness of the proposed control scheme under various working conditions.
