MEMs for optical switching applications range from 1/spl times/2 small switches through to large scale 1k/spl times/1k solutions. These switches are evolving and finding acceptance in systems with different requirements: (1) 1/spl times/2 and 2/spl times/2 switches are needed for low loss (<1 dB) 1:1 protection, requiring high reliability; (2) short reach (SR) applications (typically 1310 nm except for OC-192) which require low loss (<7 dB) but handle only low powers (<-1 dBm) [Bellcore GR253-CORE]; (3) intermediate (<12 dB) and long reach (<22 dB) applications, accepting higher losses but requiring switches capable of withstanding higher powers (<+13 dBm); (4) multimode 850 nm applications needing low cost switching solutions, most likely to be without the need for protection.
