This paper presents an innovative control method for balancing the state of charge (SOC) in a DC microgrid that integrates a photovoltaic (PV) system and an energy storage system (ESS). The method balances the SOC of the two battery storage units through adaptive sag control, which dynamically adjusts the sag coefficients based on the difference in SOC between the battery storage units. The PV system employs the Incremental Conductance (IncCond) Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) technique to ensure optimal power output. The inner loop of the control system performs current regulation through Model Predictive Control (MPC), while the outer loop manages the bus voltage through sag control. Simulation results show that the system is effective in maintaining SOC balance under different load conditions. The scheme operates at a bus voltage of 400 V and successfully balances the SOC during charge/discharge cycles as the load is dynamically varied from 16 Ω to 8 Ω. In addition, the paper provides several key equations to illustrate the exact operation of the control mechanism.
