The Spacecraft Modular Architecture Design (SMAD) Concept involves the use of an on-orbit servicing vehicle to replace and/or replenish components on a spacecraft. This study was conducted to evaluate the potential cost and benefits for on-orbit satellite servicing. Actual satellite data were used to estimate a baseline cost and to establish an operational design. This paper gives an overview of the study including the selection of servicing methodology, benefits of servicing, spacecraft impacts, selection of spacecraft components/subsystems to service, derived servicer requirements, servicer point design, and a costing evaluation.
