The advantages of motor vehicles in energy conservation and emission reduction have been widely debated and proved. Electric vehicles are being promoted in China to reduce Greenhouse Gases emissions, accelerate the country's green and low-carbon development, meet carbon goal. However, the impact of Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEVs) and Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs) on emission reduction remains a topic of debate and uncertainty. In this study, we employ the life cycle assessment (LCA) methodology to assess greenhouse gas emissions (GHGs) and air pollutant emissions throughout the vehicle's production, usage, and disposal stages. Moreover, taking into account China's carbon neutrality policy and the direction of energy transformation, we evaluate future energy scenarios to gauge the influence of increased renewable energy and nuclear energy adoption in electric vehicles. Furthermore, we conduct a comparative analysis of two types of passenger cars prevalent in China, namely PHEVs and BEVs, with regards to their emissions. Our findings reveal that PHEVs exhibit a favorable outcome in reducing GHG emissions when compared to BEVs. These differences are mainly caused by the different power sources of electric vehicles and hybrid vehicles. The results show that the GHGs emissions of BEV is 1.5 times that of PHEV. In addition, we found that increasing the proportion of nuclear energy in the energy structure has a better emission reduction effect than increasing the proportion of biomass energy.
