This article proposes a fault-tolerant (FT) control strategy for a novel matrix-torque-component machine (MTCM) based on multiple operation modes. The machine’s innovation lies in the arrangement of armature windings and permanent magnets (PMs) in both the stator and rotor, resulting in matrix-distribution torque components and high-quality postfault isolation performance. By varying the current distribution coefficient to distribute the stator and rotor q-axis currents, different torque components can be selected for output. There are three basic torque output operation modes, i.e., rotor-side torque output mode (Mode I), stator-side torque output mode (Mode II), and composite torque output mode (Mode III). Modes I and II are mainly used for light loads and Mode III for heavy loads. When open-circuit (OC) faults occur in different modes, the maintenance of output torque is achieved by switching the healthy torque components and reconfiguring the remain healthy phase currents. Due to the rich torque components, Mode III is the most FT and can cope with up to six different faulty conditions. Experimental results conclusively validate the effectiveness and feasibility of the proposed FT control strategy.
