The world is on the brink of global climate changes and urgent actions are required to reduce pollution. Transport is one of the biggest polluters. Many cities are turning to bicycles as alternative means of transport and are creating and expanding their bicycle networks. Electric bicycles are becoming increasingly popular, but they are still new and their designs are often not well optimized. An analysis of various models of commonly used batteries, in terms of their suitability for use in different types of electric bicycles, has been done. The analysis is based on the results of a long-term study related to the maximum achievable run for a daily used electric bicycle in relation to electric motor powers and available battery chargers. The conclusion is that modern electric bicycles still have certain critical design deficiencies which could be improved. The aim of this work is their designs to be optimized and the operating costs to be reduced, which will make them safer, more competitive and will stimulate their widespread use. This optimization is expected to help for the achievement of the difficult climate goals.
