This article discusses the safety and airworthiness certification issues of civil aircraft operating on narrow runways. The current mainstream single-aisle passenger aircraft are designed for standard runway widths of 45 meters, whereas narrow runways are only 30 meters wide, increasing the risk of the aircraft deviating laterally from the runway during takeoff and landing phases. The article begins by reviewing the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) standards and requirements for airport runway design, followed by an analysis of the risk factors associated with narrow runway operations, including the potential for deviating from the runway and issues with course control during taxiing. Subsequently, the article proposes suggestions for airworthiness certification specific to narrow runway operations, including safety analysis, ground minimum control speed VMCG, crosswind limitations, system failure handling, and updates the Aircraft Flight Manual (AFM). Finally, the article concludes by emphasizing the need for particular attention to aircraft safety when operating on narrow runways and the verification of the aircraft's control capabilities through flight tests or simulator demonstrations.
