One of the main challenges that faces satellite subsystem developers is reducing the cost while maintaining high reliability. The main causes of high satellite subsystem cost is space hardened components. Recently a lot of satellite developers start shifting to commercial components to reduce the cost significantly. This paper presents an approach for COTS components selection in a low cost small satellite telemetry module. The implemented telemetry subsystem uses a Master and Slaves microcontrollers, these chips need to be reliable to realize high probability of success. In this paper we demonstrate the selection criteria for both the Master/Slave microcontrollers. The selection criteria include technical requirements, such as a high processing power (more than 40 MIPS) for the Master microcontroller, and a suitable number of peripherals are needed for the Slave microcontrollers. The selection criteria also include space environment tests results and heritage of earlier space missions, while maintaining the low cost of the system for both microcontrollers.
