This research paper proposes to establish a real-time traffic management system with the use of Radio-Frequency Identification (RFID) by deploying suitable hardware at every possible junction throughout Delhi. The hardware is capable of tracking each registered vehicle in Delhi crossing at the junctions, which contains an RFID tag. The data acquired through this setup can be leveraged for the following purposes: • A mobile application that is an upgraded version of Google maps • Adaptive/Actuated traffic Light System • Vehicle Theft Control • Semi-automated Electronic Challan System (e-Challan) • Fully automated Electronic Tolls • To prevent terrorist/criminal activities • Systematic Public Transport System The system of hardware, if installed, can record real-time traffic density to a degree, which is not yet achieved by Google Maps. It can replace the fixed timing circuits at traffic signal junctions with adaptive timing circuit, which keeps changing the time limit of the red lights as per the traffic density of the road. The system can reduce traffic jams in Delhi by monitoring the real-time traffic density and use the data to divide and distribute the traffic to alternate paths, thus preventing the traffic jams. As a result, people will be able to commute at a faster rate, thereby reducing fuel wastage and emissions. It will also help in reducing the average time taken to commute and thus in reducing the stress and anxiety of commuters. With the development of systematic public transport, more number of people will opt commuting via public transport such as DTC buses, which can prove to be a vital step towards safety of our female commuters. The system will have many other positive effects on the lives of people, which have been explained later. The system has a few disadvantages and limitations as well. Installation and maintenance of the hardware on such a large scale would not only require high capital but dedicated human resources as well. In addition, since the system involves gathering information without the consent of commuters, it can leave people with privacy issues and much other insecurity. However, the benefits of such system once in place will outweigh the risks and disadvantages.
