The idea for this Special Issue on HF Radar was conceived in early 2016 and refined at the 2016 IEEE Radar Conference in Philadelphia where the four Guest Editors-to-be were all present. Lamenting the rather fragmented nature of the literature on HF radar and, indeed, of the HF radar community itself, we decided that a special issue of a popular and authoritative journal would serve to expose the state-of-the-art of our discipline to the wider engineering community and, simultaneously, reinvigorate links between the various active research groups. The choice of the IEEE Aerospace and Electronic Systems Magazine as our medium was a no-brainer.
