In this paper, a new method for the recuperation of regenerative braking energy in electric rail transit systems is proposed. Regenerative braking energy is the energy produced by trains during deceleration (their motors act as generators). This energy can be fed back to the main grid through a reversible substation. Another technique to capture this energy is the installation of a wayside energy storage system. To have the benefit of both techniques, these two technologies are combined and called a hybrid method. In this paper, a simulation model for hybrid reversible substation and wayside energy storage is proposed. Matlab/Simulink is used for simulating the proposed model.
