In this paper we experimentally investigate a high-speed full-duplex indoor optical wireless communication system incorporating subcarrier multiplexing to accommodate for multiple users. Subcarrier multiplexed downlink allows a simpler multi-user access scheme whereby subcarrier allocated for a user is extracted and directly detected using an optical bandpass filter and a low-cost and low-speed photodiode. Compared with the conventional millimeter-wave-over-fiber system, our proposed system does not require any high-speed opto-electronics devices and has a simpler signal distribution scheme. Our results show that error-free operation of simultaneous 5 Gbps (2×2.5 Gbps) down-link and a 255 Mbps up-link can be achieved.
