The goal of our work was to implement optical interconnects based on silicon (Sil integrated circuit (IC) technology since the majority of VLSI circuits are based on Si technology. A highly desirable feature is to monolithically integrate opto-electronic components with Si ICs in order to reduce both cost and energy dissipation. First, we designed and fabricated a monolithically integrated photodiode and amplifier in our Si bipolar technology. Based on our Si receiver performance, we estimated the requirements of organic light emitting diodes (LEDs) for their efficiency and speed.
