Presently, the broad use of 62.5/125 /spl mu/m fiber is limited because the cost of installing such a fiber system is high compared to conventional copper wire approaches. Three logical media alternatives for reducing cost arise: The first, copper twisted wire pair; the second, large-core (460/500 /spl mu/m), plastic optical fiber; and the third, 200/230 /spl mu/m step index, large-core, silica fiber.<>
