Optimal Power Flow (OPF) is used in a standalone all-electric ship (AES) to minimize generation cost, while maintaining the voltage within constraints. Due to computational complexity in solving the OPF problem using a centralized approach, a distributed optimization technique using the alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM) is employed. Two types of ADMM methods: synchronous and asynchronous, are used for a 9-node ring bus topology and their computational efficiency is compared. Master and workers control the system by dividing it into areas, and the sequence of operations is demonstrated considering any communication delays. The proposed control strategy can be extended to a higher node dc microgrid that includes power electronic converters, pulsed loads, energy storage, and the efficiency can be tested for different topologies.
