The Austrian truck tolling system (brand name "GO-Maut") went into operation on January 1st, 2004. All vehicles above 3.5 t maximum weight are subject to a distance related motorway toll. The tolling system is operated by EUROPPASS, a subsidiary of the Italian motorway operator AUTOSTRADE. The toll is collected on behalf of the state owned Austrian highways agency ASFINAG, which operates the 2000 km Austrian motorway network. The toll is levied with an electronic fee collection system based on 5.8 GHz microwave DSRC according to the CEN standards. A tolling gantry with DSRC beacons is erected on each of the 800 Austrian motorway sections. The system is operated in full free-flow multilane mode and does not constrain or influence traffic in any way. The presentation gives details of the system implementation and highlights important lessons learnt as well as practical aspects of operating a large free-flow system.
