The vision is of a car's electronics tied into a complete roadside network. This intelligent transportation systems promises zero fatalities on accident-free roads. The US government announced that it would finally begin to explore the integration of in-car electronics with the highway information networks it has been rolling out, ever so slowly. The project is called the vehicle infrastructure integration initiative (VII); its abbreviation has led to the project picking up the nickname 'seven'. The concept behind VII is that vehicle manufacturers will install a communications device on the vehicle, starting at some future date, and equipment will be installed on the nation's transportations system to allow all vehicles to communicate with the infrastructure.
