As part of the trans-European project STREETWISE (Seamless Travel Environment for the Western Isles of Europe), the European Union and the Scottish Executive are jointly funding ongoing enhancements to the National Driver Information and Control System (NADICS). The Scottish Executive undertook trials of two specific travel time systems on the Scottish trunk road network. The local journey time system is a loop-based system that displays journey times to destinations or events as selected by NADICS depending on traffic conditions. The journey time through road works system is based on conventional number plate recognition technology to inform drivers of delays through road works. This paper outlines the need for, and development of, the two systems.
