The paper discusses the disturbance situation of an FMCW radar, particularly that of a car cruise control sensor (“car radar”) in dense traffic. Simple time- and frequency-sharing arguments do not evaluate the disturbance situation correctly; there are in general more disturbances than these methods indicate. However, a suitable disturbance suppression policy will make the FMCW radar quite interference-resistant. In particular, well-known methods from digital signal processing can be used for suppressing both short (pulse-like) and longer (chirp-like) disturbances. Several methods are illustrated (non-mathematically), using entire road scenarios of real or simulated data.
