The lecture falls naturally into three parts. The first part is a brief account of the development of the earlier engine types which were built in Belfast and the later types which were both designed and constructed there; the complete story constitutes a distinctive chapter in the evolution of the marine Diesel engine.

In the second section a number of important, practical problems are described, and a detailed account is given of their elucidation. In the third section some typical contrivances are illustrated, each being an invention to overcome a specific difficulty.

The lecture ends with some general observations.
